and the Word became flesh…

Right now I can probably count on two hands the number of friends who are expecting. Not to mention acquaintances or friends of friends with a bun in the oven. It’s baby fever, people.

But, all this baby business got me thinking about God becoming a tiny human being, you know the ones with the incredibly precious tiny fingers and toes, through the birth of Jesus. God gives us beauty every day, and what a beautiful way for Christ to put on flesh — to become one of us.

On my trip to Israel last July, we visited the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth. According to Roman Catholic tradition, that is where Mary received the news from Gabriel that she would birth the Savior. Now, the Greek Orthodox disagree on the location and their church is across town at Mary’s well. Regardless, Mary got the news somewhere in the neighborhood.

But what was so striking about the Church of the Annunciation, was the courtyard and the upper level chapel are lined with mosaics, donated from countries all over the world, reaching 20 feet tall . Each mosaic, depicts Mary and her son through the lens of each culture. Each depicts the beauty of a mother and her son, the beauty of the incarnation, the beauty of the Word becoming flesh.
