recipe: new york street cart dog

Hope everyone enjoyed celebrating their fourth of July.

The family came to my house for what I hoped to be an authentic hot dog straight off the streets of the Big Apple.

In my humble opinion, when it comes to a street dog or a Gray’s Papaya dog, it’s all about the onions.

I gave Bobby Flay’s recipe a try, and it came pretty darn close to the real deal. It was super easy, and the onion sauce made it. I even made sauerkraut with a dash of brown sugar to be fancy.

Decked out in our red, white and blue, the New York street cart dog recipe got two thumbs up.

Here’s the lowdown on the onion sauce. For the full recipe, go here.
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 medium onions, cut into 1/4-inch slices
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 cup ketchup
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

I skipped the oil, and sautéed the onions using PAM spray. I also left out the salt and pepper since we were going for a lower sodium version. Still great.
